well, i know its been awhile since i have posted (another story) but
i thought i would update u guys on my hair. basically, i want to
take the locs out (wishing auntie, anna, etc were closer to me
definitely). i have lost a total of 4 locs in a weeks time. two
were thinner than i thought and a slight pull in putting a bra
headband on resulted in those being gone. the other two, i was just
messing in my head trying to inspect and make sure they wouldn't do
like the first two and poof- they fell out too. this has saddened me
to no end. i cannot blame this on the latchhook method b/c overall
the remaining ones are very strong (i pull almost religiously now
just to make sure). i do have a small fro going on in the front
which i assume is part of the loc process. it doesn't look bad or
anything. i don't know what is going on but i know i didnt start
what was supposed to be not just a hair journey but a spriritual one
as well to only be six months in this thing and losing locs. i
haven't discussed this w/anyone until i talked to auntie today.
surely don't want to give the non-nappturals any more fuel to add to
the fire. i am really discouraged and close to undoing these locs
and going back to my fro. i know it would take forever to take down
but how many more locs am i going to lose?

Hair color (natural/chemical dye)

Hi everyone!
I was just wondering whats your favorite type of hair color? It
doesn't matter if it's chemical or natural. Has anyone tried Clairol
Natural Insticts? I was thinking of trying it, seems good!
Thx :)

Ok I think the top 2 does help in overall health & the body. But I will say for myself I never have been a water person & many of the fluids I take in aren't the best. The excersing I really haven't seen it doing much for my hair, even when I was going to the gym often & taking belly dancing classes. The other 3 are right on target
for me ;-)!!!
But you know you left out 2 things.....Suave Milk n Honey & Olive Oil!!!!,lol let me quit.

Okay, can I just vent for about 60 seconds? I just wanted to say
that I have been amazed at how my hair is reacting to this sta-sof-
fro hair moisturizer. I am loving how soft it's making my hair. I
used it before but I didn't like the way that it was making my hair
feel. It was really sticky. But this time, I guess since my hair is
longer and I can really work it in with a good leave in (Aveda
Elixir), my hair is super soft. Okay, just had to vent for a minute.
You all have a good day. LG

Welcome to the group Elaine, so glad that you have joined us!!!
First I would like to say congratulations on your new au' natural lifestyle. And I wish you success and blessings on your support group & helping and teaching others.
I loved ya answer on attending the school of life, so many of us don't know it but we are. And far as undoing the brainwashing, it is so deep rooted. I think it is going to take major work in order for changes to be made. But I must say natural hair & lifestyles are being more & more accepted and practiced.

Keepin' it healthy: Top 5

2007-04-28 16:19:40

I was just thinking about all the things we do to our hair to keep it in A-1 shape. If pressed to come up with a top five list, I figured I'd use the following (what about you?):

1. Drink plenty of fluids. I would say water, but just making sure to keep yourself hydrated is the main point. Water is best, but as hot as it's been, popicles have done the job sometimes.

2. Exercise. I experienced the best results with 1 and 2 working in concert with each other. Exercise get's the scalp hair working and get's those follicles in line to do their thang - with adequate fluids inside of the body. I had the best hair growth when I was riding my bike on the regular in Alabama, I've gotten back into it again and I already know it's gonna be ON!

3. Conditioner. No matter what brand, find what routine/combo works for you and go with it! Leave in, extra thick, regular, they're all good friends of mine. [INLINE]

4. Cleanse. I don't know about clarifying, but I've learned time and time again that keeping that scalp and the tresses clean is very important.

5. Leave it alone. I know it's hard to do, but when you're going to work e'ryday, or when classes start, it get's easier to do. Keep your progess updated e'ry once in awhile and you'll be stunned at the progress. I guarantee it. [INLINE]

No heat was used.

Hey Y'all this has nothing to do with hair but.....

2007-04-26 20:30:58

I shared this with some friends on BP and they cracked up....so I'll
share it with you guys. I swear, my childhood was crazy....perhaps
that's why I'm the class-A Nut that I am now....LOL, Enjoy! PEACE
Thanks DaDiva for this Post, we sure can use it...LOL
I got 3 brothers, 3 sisters - my dad worked swing shift so a lot of
the time it was more convenient for my mom & dad to go grocery
shopping late nights at the 24-hr supermarket....what peeved my mom
more than anything is, we had to be in the bed at 9:00pm with the
lights off, right? Especially school nights.
If she caught us outta bed, then well, it was on!! About 30 yrs
ago.....(LOL... I know long time, but I remember it like yesterday) I
was like 8 or 9 and my sister was 10 or 11 -
Me & my sister shared a room, but our room was like right off of the
kitchen, so we could always hear all the goings on up in there (big
plus, right?) so this particular night mom & dad had went shopping
and they always had to buy like loads and loads of food & took a long
time to put up. So we`d listen and wait til when they put up all the
food, we could go in and find some goodies, and then sneak back into
bed and crunch and sing while we`s crunchin` - right?(y`all know how
we do)...LOL, so my sister she always put me up to the dirty work,
cause I was the fat azz, who`d do anything for food, so, we listened
and when my mama had put up all the food, I waited a few minutes
until I heard her turn off the light and head on out. I told my
sister that I wasn`t going in there in the dark by myself, and that
she had to come too, so she kept callin` me out, but she wanted to
grub too, so she brought her azz on! So we make it into the kitchen,
and "Lord, Eureka, Jesus, Friend O` Mine!" there they were - yep, THE
OREOS....LOL, so we goes in there, in the dark mind you, to the open
cupboard so we could get the Oreos, now they wasn`t put in the cookie
jar so we had to steal the whole pkg! We was plottin` and whisperin`
(or so we thought) when "WHAM" on comes the light, and there my
mother is in the middle of the door, with her hands on her hips and
holdin` up her flat azzed house shoe, and threw it at me.....then she
commenced to gettin her belt, which was right on the chair in the
hallway, of course, my fat azz grew wings, I dropped that pkg of
cookies and was rollin` back to the bedroom, my sister was hot on my
heels behind me runnin` for cover, but my mama was comin` fast, and
yellin` and whuppin (but mostly hittin` air) at the same time "I-DONE-
TOLE-Y`ALL-AZZ-TO-STAY-OUT-THE-DAMN-KITCHEN-PAST-9:00-BLAH-BLAH-
BLAH!" and we was screamin` and beggin` and cryin` and mama didn`t
hit nothin` but air, and really thought she was doin`
somethin`....but we cried anyway, because if we didn`t she woulda
really ripped us apart. So we in the room, after she left, cryin` and
hollin` "I hate her, she make me sick, ole ballhead dog!" and
everything we could think of. (we love mama, but at that time, well
you know how it is...LOL) Then we started crackin` up laughin` at
what we tried to do. She heard us laughin` and threatened again, but
never showed back up.....But now to this day, when we havin` a good
ole family laugh, that comes up, and everybody be crackin` up about
it. You know what though, My kids could use a good beatin` too, but
nowadays they got the law on they side, so I`m stuck with puttin` `em
on punishment. Okay, guys, PEACE

Lol ok ya I don't know what's been going on with me, but I been wanting to pair small finger waves with my natural hair, and a sista don't know why. Like a few small ones going straight back or curving in at the face with some swirled sideburns and having the back out in a textured or curly fro sounds a lil ghetto I know, lol but I know I could pull it off?? Now another thing is I never did finger waves before and I know if I do them I am going to have to use that icky brown gel that after I use I am going to have to apoligize to my hair for awhile for using. Also if i don't get it down pact myself I'mma have to let someone else in my head which I haven't in years, and especially not since going natural. So I am veryyyy skeptical about tha, plus no one can do my hair as good as me ;-)t. But my mind has just been wrapping itself around this style(if only ya knew my brain when it comes down to hair). So now I have to figure out how I'mma let this style creation come to birth, lol

[GrowingHealthyNappturalHair]O/T I am a Christian by Maya Angelou

2007-04-24 07:46:29

Here is a poem that Maya Angelou wrote and just thought I should share it with you all because it is very good. Plus I appreciate her more, because we share the same birthday, as well as poetry writing(although a sista don't do it to often anymore) =-). I just think how great it would be if I could inspire, touch, and motivate people like this woman has.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin."
I'm whispering "I was lost,"
Now I'm found and forgiven.
When I say..."I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
and need CHRIST to be my guide.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
and need HIS strength to carry on.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed
and need God to clean my mess.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible
but, God believes I am worth it.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain,
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon His name.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner
Who received God's good grace, somehow.
Author ~Maya Angelou~

you can use a gentle clarifying shampoo, i used IC pure tea
shampoo on my daughter, it works great for her, but it dried out
my hair somethin feirce (shrug) , look into a gentle clarifying
shampoo, some do acv (apple cider vinegar) rinses for build up
or baking soda, i have never tried them so i cant say how to do
them...sorry, hope that helps. might have to shampoo a little
more often....

Hi Neecie, becoming a new you is such a wonderful thing isn't it??? I love going through new phases, probally wish I had them more often, lol
I am a tall sista and pretty thick, along with having a head that can be quite big at times, lol and I have found that a fuller style usually works best on me. Like a fro, curls,or waves....so maybe that might work for you. But at the same time don't let what you feel far as weight on ya stop ya from working some styles!!. I have many women of full sizes look good in comb coils and other short or less full dos. just let ya confidence and ya strutting do all the work!!
So comb coils you should try and if you don't like them you can un-do them and wear ya hair in a curly style. Or you can leave loose strands out in the front and back along with the comb coils for a different type of look.
Also for other styling options here is a site that lists and shows pictures of different styles along with how tos if you would liek to try them yourself. http://motowngirl.com/how_to.htm

somewhere in that area, but I don't know the difference.

crazy. It is an all natural product that contains things like
nettle, peppermint, rosemary, etc. If anyone is interested I can
give a complete ingredient list, I am not looking at the jar at the

that has purchased it raves about it. It has a pleasant smell and is
very reasonable. Please let me know if anyone would like more

Hi Pat. Well I know a few directories that list natural hair care and when I checked for Nashville salons t I found 2 that are located their but it didn't say if they specialize in natural hair, just that they deal with african-american hair so maybe you can call and ask them their specialities or go in and view their work. This site also has other salons located in Tennessee as well http://www.afrohair.com/haircare/tn_001.htm#nash
Oh also with trimming their hair an easy way to trim their hair at home that dosen't take much time or give you a guide. is by putting their hair in 2 strand twists all over and just cutting off the very end of the twists.

2007-04-17 09:20:42

Ya like the title line say, a sista feel like a newly natural & a new natuaral awakening, lol. I mean I always been in love with my natural hair and texture, but lately i have truely been in love. For about 2 or 3 weeks I wouldn't wear any other style but my pony puff. ya I love this style!! People were asking me how I did it like I put loads of work into it and I had to do extra stuff to get it to come out like it did. And to me this is one of the easist styles I have ever had. Then I know I am in love with my natural hair because even tho i don't mind adding extra hair or whatever, I have really became ok without it. For so long even with coming into my naturalness because my hair takes alot to style it fin different styles and with being natural styles like a twist/braid out, or curls I always felt I needed to add hair or go the easier route of using hair that ain't mine. But it comes out just as beautiful or even more beautiful without not adding and doing much to it at
all. And it feels awkward because I always have been the type to just go over and beyond with my hair and hair in general because i love it & sorta felt I had too, but it is a beautiful thing
Oh yea I also had bought quite a few new products or products I don't buy often because so many people and naturals went on and on about it or just to feel like nothing was wrong with me and I was able to try new products, lol. I end up trying out Suauve Aloe Vera conditioner(all right), ORS Carrot Oil(loved it & the smell, but can do without it),Smooth n Shine Polishing Curl Activator Activator Gel with Aloe Vera, Softee Gel.Now these was all cool products but I found after spending my darn money for them, lol. That with sticking with my Olive Oil, Suave Milk n Honey, snd Pro-Tress gel thats all me and my hair needs to be happy =-). Ok now I'm just going on & on now, lol. But basically I am just really allowing myself to enjoy my hair & me it. So all of those who haven't truely enjoyed your natural/napptural journey, i say you should try it. It is a great experience.

2007-04-16 17:49:18

I've been bad. Very bad.

Instead of my usual overnight deep conditionings, I've been leaving it in for a few minutes while in the shower - which isn't enough (nothing compares to the softness of overnight conditioned hair).

Why?

Because it's been 90+ degrees for the past few weeks. We had a freak rainstorm last Friday, but other than that, putting conditioner in my hair while it's so dawg gone hot makes the smell of the conditioner so strong it makes your head reel.

Has anyone noticed this around their way? I never really had this problem in the south where it's more of a humid heat instead of a dry heat.

Oh what wonders

2007-04-16 06:34:45

Hey ladies, I went to the motown girl site and tried the hair growth
mixture. I don't know if it will actually promote hair growth, but
it sure does make my scalp sing. It feels great. I'm gonna post the
link below so you all can check it out for yourselves. And let me
warn you, a little is all it takes. I got carried away and greased
myself a little too much. hehehe The only thing about that is, I
think I may have to use that in the mornings rather than at night.
For some reason, after applying it and sniffing the bottles, I
didn't/couldn't go to bed till about 1 this morning. I'm so wired!
I think it's that stuff. It has peppermint and rosemary oil, which
are stimulants. They've probably done more than stimulated my hair
follicles.

Hey everybody,
Transitioning has made my hair really thick (as it naturally is). For
yall who know how this is, it's really annoying. What is your
favorite style/products to manage thick hair easier? I wrap my hair
after washing it and stuff, but when it's dry I want to put it in a
bun, and sometimes it's so thick that it is really hard.
What style/products do you suggest??

Re: [GrowingHealthyNappturalHair] regarding no daily shampooing and picture

2007-04-14 18:17:39

Lovely picture, Karen. I see what you're talking about now. To me, and I may be wrong, it looks like you have varying textures of hair. I have the same thing. I can do whatever I want to some parts of my hair, but other parts get dry as a bone and refuse to cooperate without tons of moisture. All I can suggest is maybe compensating for that by putting more moisturizer/oils/butters/whatever you use on the drier parts of your hair. HTH

Do you do any protective styling at all like buns or other updos? I find that my hair is very soft if I wear protective styles for awhile before attempting a puff or whatever else.

As for trims, I do my own. I've always had a problem with "scissor happy stylists" as SuperGirl from longhaircareforum.com would say, LOL. You might be able to find a good stylist that cuts exactly how much you want to be cut off, but I think you'd be better off by trimming the dry/raggedy ends yourself. I just take some scissors and use two fingers to hold a piece of hair down while I trim.

I honestly can't give you pointers on how to make sure other stylists know how to deal with your hair cause I haven't found a good stylist yet (aside from the napptural sistahs who hooked me up on 'hair days' they've been the best stylists I've had since becoming napptural).

regarding no daily shampooing and picture

2007-04-14 04:24:32

hi...well..wrote on the calendar the day I used shampoo and now
for three days I have jumped in the shower in the
morning...rinsed my hair and used conditioner and nothing
else....no combing...
today we went for a walk and I had my husband take a pic of my
hair...there was a front one but I didn't like it...lol...but
the back one shows my hair...this is after the shower...and just
a sorta cloth/elastic thing...the thin ones....something I
noticed is that the top of my hair is dryer than the rest of my
hair...which I guess is the sun?...when the wind blows it, it
tends to end up sorta fly away looking...
will get hubby to take another pic of the front...
do have a question though...when it gets to the point where I
feel like I need to sorta trim the ends off...don't want to trim
to to fit some of the shorter lengths...just to sorta get the
dryer ends off...and gradually get it more even in length...how
do I make sure that wherever I go I don't end up with them
chopping it all off?...and how do I make sure the person knows
how to deal with my hair?...ok...maybe I am being over paranoid
but then I am still reacting to what people did to it many years
ago...maybe nowdays people who get their training are more
diversified and know how to deal with curly hair...I don't see
me going any day soon...no matter how uneven it may be....lol
will put the pic also at the site where others have theirs...

I spritz my hair in the morning with a mixture of olive oil and water. My spray bottle is small, so I fill the bottle up to the rim and add 3-4 tbls or olive oil, sometimes I will add a little African Royale Braid Sheen to it. I bought a product yesterday by Organic called Carrot Oil. It has johoba oil, tea tree oil. ginseng, and I can't remember the others because I am at work and didn't bring the bottle, but it is very soothing and rejuvenating to the scalp. My locs don'g feel dry at all. I don't think I will have the need to add the braid sheen to my spritz.

Hello all,
I joined this group months ago when I still had plenty of relaxed
hair. I would read your posts and try to educate myself on what I
needed to do. Well, about 3 weeks ago I made the transition. I had
been going to a Dominican salon and letting them blow my hair stick
straigt, well almost, and enduring a burning scalp in the process.
Finally, I just said forget and headed to Harlem to get it twisted.
I wore those for two months, then braids for three months, and now I
have two strand twists.
Well after the braids were left in for three months you can imagine
the joy I had getting the tangles out. Take Down could not help the
situation. I stood in the mirror and just stared at the mess on my
head. I decided that it HAD to go. Ran around the apt. looking for
scissors to take the matter into my own hands! CHOP! No turning
back now. After about 15 minutes of chopping it was finally done.
Now granted it isn't even by any means but it's all natural now. The
next day I headed back to Harlem for the two strand twists and the
braided chastised me for cutting it off. I just smiled and
said "It's hair, it will grow back."
What the heck do I do now? I've been reading about different
products. Several of you have mentioned Aveda and there's always
Carol's Daughter. It felt really dry when it was all said and done.
What is the best product for that. I've read that your hair will

Welcome, Crickett! It seems like you're well in tune with your hair already. I look forward to your addition to the group as a positive example of cultivating locs. We have decent number of other loc wearers in the group as well. Make yourself at home. [INLINE]

[GrowingHealthyNappturalHair] Masoncrickett Intro

2007-04-09 14:40:56

Hello,

My name is Crickett and I am a female. [INLINE] I live in St. Louis Missouri and I was surfing the web for different discussion forums on natural hair and locs. I have not had a perm since March 04. I knew then I did not want another perm. I wore two strand twist with my natural hair and crochet hairstyles. I decided to get micro braids with the wet and wavy hair around the second week of May. After doing alot of reading and research on locs, sisterlocs and natural hair, I made the decision to just loc my hair. It was time for the braids to come down and I had been read where people transitioned into locs from their braids. During my research, I have seen so many pretty pictures of locs and that was another inspiration. So having made this decision, I feel free with my hair and I am excited because some of my hair has already locked. I have 1-2 inches of new growth. My goal is to have locs about the same size as sisterlocs. The first time I retwisted my hair,
which was about three weeks ago, I used Murray's Beeswax. I liked the way it, but I have not heard too many good stories about beeswax. I spritz my hair with a mixture of olive oil and water. Sometimes I add a little African Royale Braid Sheen and Organic Mayonaisse Leave In Conditioner. It is time for me to do maintenance and I am going to use OR Loc Gel this time. I have had the opportunity to try any of the eo I have read about, but I will get around to it. Right now, I usually pull the front of my hair up into a ponytail and let the back hang down, or I pull all of it up into a loose ponytail. To add a little flavor, I sometimes pull some of the hair out around the hairline. I don't really have a favorite product yet. My birthday is 12/08. I can give advice from some of the things I have and will experience. I can be supportive to everyone and I hope to gain the same. My ultimate goal is to have a head full of beautiful locs. Patient is a virtue and when
growing locs you gain patience. Lauryn Hill was my inspiration towards investigating natural hair and locs.

It is very sad that we have been taught to hate ourselves. I told my mother in law that I recently went natural and that sometimes I'll sport the fro. She had such a look of "oh my gosh are you serious?" Like it wasn't acceptable. I expect that stupidity from white people, not from my own. It's sad because we have been fooled into hating our own beauty. The fro wasn't just a style back in the day. The fro is our hair. Naturally.

I made it

2007-04-08 16:44:02

I managed to keep my box braids in for two weeks and one day. It was
tough and I don't think I will do it again. I think I got some
breakage from keeping them in that long, and they were really tough
to take out, probably because i rinsed them daily to keep the itches
away. All in all my hair felt really good when I took them down. I
plan to do twists tonight. Still sticking with the protective styles
challenge. Hopefully I will be able to do a bun soon!

This is what we're here for!

NO, you're not wrong for feeling what you feel.

NO, you're not alone in going through positive and negative experiences because of how you choose to wear your hair.

Feel free to post anytime. Any other questions/comments you have are also welcome.

Heck, one of the main reasons I want out of my parents' house so fast is because my mom has no problem feeling like she can talk about my hair 24/7 and how "much better" I looked in middle/high school with my permie hair. I just thank heavens everyday that I saw the light before my head started looking tore up with dime size and bigger bald spots from relaxing like her. I love her dearly, but I just can't hang with her now that I'm an adult.

Shealoe Butter/Shea Oil Product Review

2007-04-07 21:09:14

Hey gang! I tried the shealoe butter/shea oil mix on my hair today
and found that it does just about the same thing as the mango
butter/coconut oil. They both give my hair a sheen, can't use too
much oil. Also, they help retain my curls. I give the shealoe
butter/shea oil mix a thumbs up.

thank you for sharing the pictures....I will have to get my husband
to take some of mine...and yeah...you're right...what works for one
persons hair doesn't necessarily work on someone else's hair....
on the show that I saw...the little girl...think that's what they did
initially...like the hot comb thing and then were going to set it up
to do the actual chemical deal to straighten it...
guess that's what I meant was hairstyles...I tend to have the
hairband with the big poof in the back...it's not quite long enough
to do the scruntch things...I bought some and ever now and then try
them...but I have also been trying to get it in a ponytail type
thing...not realizing that I could do other things...did try like
sorta parting it and taking the front/sides and just twisting it and
pulling it back and pinning it...with the back still all poofy...but
guess I need to get creative and experiment.....
I feel fortunate that my husband happens to like my hair...he met me
with it...lol...whereas my first husband met me when I was
straightening it...unfortunately he also liked long hair...and dark
hair...I was 17...what did I know...so went along with buying a long
dark fall...looked really good with my pale/freckled skin....I looked
sick or something...when I was 30 and got my hair cut...some of the
curl was already growing back in...I walked in the door and he took
one look at me and said "I don't like it"....
I do get a kick out of the grandkids...and no...none of them got my
hair...all straight as a bone hair...along with my kids...I figure it
will be the great grandkids...and people will be going "huh?"...just
like they did with me...lol....but the grandkids are little and they
like to pat my hair...they look at it sorta quizically...trying to
figure it out....I think my one grandaughter when she was around 3
even asked me "grandma...why your hair like that?"
thank you for I guess sorta letting me talk about it...I can laugh
now about being called "Bozo the Clown"...and old TV program many
moons ago....but back then it wasn't funny...

thank you...it's cool to be able to get ideas and suggestions...will
try it and let you know how it works...right now I just use the
Pantene and the Infusium 23...think I forget which one I am using so
end up with both....and then I put some of the Infusium leave in
stuff in a spray bottle with some water and sometimes touch up with
it if it's really dry or frizzy...

I have just moved into the Atlanta area and I would
like to know when was the last time we had a meet and

about one coming up, we should get on the topic of
that. I am interested in meeting some new people. In
KC,where I came from, the females didn't seem as
interested. SO ladies lets figure out when we should
have the next one.

Me for one is lazy, I should be doing massages but i don't. But the few times I have, I have used store bought Olive Oil, ORS Carrot Oil, or African Pride or Royale Body & Hair Oil. And with my own hair tangles really don't get to me 4 some reason, but when it does I usually load my hair up with conditioner, oil, and some water and just go through it.
But finger or regular combing or brushing your hair before, during, or after a shampoo or just while the hair is wet and well moisturized will help. Along with combing or brushing your hair in sections.

Karen,
Welcome to the group and I am so glad you posted. My sisters first
relaxer was a Curl Free so you kinda reminded me of her. They still
make it and it is the only relaxer I know of that doesn't have an
African American on the box! Feel free to ask questions and we will
all try our best to answer. First, the tighter the curl in the hair
the more it tends to be dry, frizzy and susceptible to breakage.
Combat that with moisture. I only comb my hair with drenched with
conditioner, that keeps the breakage down to a minimum. I rinse my
hair daily and condition several times a week. I minimize my use of
shampoo because it tends to dry my hair out. A good leave-in
conditioner is a must for maintaining moisture. I use Paul Mitchell
the conditioner. A protein conditioner will help damaged hair but
don't use more that once a month or it can lead to dryness.

I don't shampoo my hair often at all. Only about once a month in the
summer and once a quarter in the winter. However I do rinse daily
and conditioner wash several times a week. Shampoo tends to dry my
hair out. Once a week I clarify with conditioner mixed with lemon
juice and that prevent buildup. The only time I shampoo more often
is when i use products with mineral oil because they tend to build
up. I haven't had any problems with build up of natural oils and
butters.

I think it's an excellent idea and probably the best thing to do if you're experiencing a lot of dryness with shampooing. Just pay attention to your scalp and how it reacts. If you have a history of dandruff problems, it might not be the best thing to do, but otherwise, go for it.

As for build up, I really don't see it as a problem as long as you clarify/shampoo at least occasionally like your sister does.

Mornin' right back to you. [INLINE]

Natural butters keep the moisture within my hair shaft...it also helps to make my hair feel soft.

For many people with coily/kinky hair, trying different products is the only way to figure out what works for them. Aveda works great for me, but other nappturals have had less than stellar experiences with it. Just thought I'd put that out there in case you end up finding something else that works great for you. [INLINE]

Peoples Views on Natural(long)

morning...thank you for the ideas...I realized in reading your reply
how very little I have really done with my hair in a longer
state...although...just thought of something....I do remember a long
time ago sorta braiding it like it would be two pony tails and then
pinning them sorta up on my head....hadn't thought of that for at
night...might work and like you said keep it from sorta standing on
end in the morning....along with like you said maybe spraying a
little of the leave in conditioner...I wonder if the reason that
certain areas seem more frizzy is like when a kid sleeps and from the
moving around of their head they end up with like it almost
ratted....hard to believe that there was a time when people
deliberately "ratted" their hair...
what do the natural butters do?...
wrote down the Aveda...will check it out...
appreciate the ideas...I think that's mostly what I am looking
for...ideas for care of my hair but also ideas for what to do with
it...
right now it's a combo of how to care for it and also sorta
continuing to work on my way of looking at my hair....all my life
people said I was "lucky" to have naturally curly hair...all my life
I hated it and when I looked in the mirror I saw it as ugly...I
wanted long straight hair cause that was supposedly "pretty"...grew
up in the 50's and 60's in Southern California...surfer girls...I
hated swimming in High School...even forged notes from my mom saying
I was on my period...till they contacted my mom cause I seemed to be
on a perpetual period...just to get out of swimming cause of what my
hair would look like afterwards...now I try and look at it with
different eyes...or a different perspective...
this will sound a bit strange but one of the things I had to "learn"
to do and be ok with was letting the wind blow my hair...letting it
move if it wanted to...then when my sister was staying with me we
went outside and the wind was blowing...her hair comes down to below
her shoulders and it was almost standing up in the back from the
wind...and didn't phase her...so now when I am outside and my hair
decides to move I tell myself "it's ok"...crazy I guess...
just seems such a waste that I spent so many years hating something
on top my head...but guess it doesn't help that in society we have
advertising to sorta pound into our minds as to what is pretty or ok
and anything not that is somehow something that has to be controlled
or changed....saw something recently where a little girl had sorta
the long afro look and the mom came on the show and it was all about
how kids made fun of the little girl and how unhappy she was about
her hair and so they set her up to make it straighter and all the
sudden life was good etc etc....and I could only think "how sad" that

my hair seems to do that to...like it can't get enough
moisturizing....
was wondering on shampooing....if a persons hair tends to be dryish
should they shampoo less...I think I remember my sister saying that
she only actually shampooed her hair like once a week...but would
shower/bathe each day and just use conditioner...seems like that
would build up conditioner in the hair...

for those of you that have that hard to manage hair
like I do, I think I found a piece of the problem. I
think my hair is happy about that!

I'm glad you found something that works for you, and like you said I know your hair is happy too!! That is one of the easiest way of dealing with natural hair during and after it is washed. Because if some people tangle and matt their hair together it si done and over for them. I wish when I was younger and natural my mom would have thought about that, lol. Cuz we use to struggleeeeeeee. Also if you havent tried it, sometimes twisting the hair in a big 2-strand twist or bantu knot helps to know which piece you have already finished or do it in those ways to help with drying ya hair after a wash.
