Re: Transitioners Progress

2007-10-31 21:20:16

I love the progress I am seeing while growing out my hair. When I was
getting relaxers I could never tell how much my hair was growing. Now
that I'm growing my natural hair out, I can just put a ruler up to my
new growth and see for myself.
BIG HUGE DILEMA
NEED HELP PLEASEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like to wear my hair straight, mostly because thats what im used to
doing. The problem is everytime I flat iron my hair, my roots
straighten out for 10 minutes if i do it myself or 4 days if i go to
a stylist and have her flat iron it and pay $65.
Does anyone know how to striaighten and keep straight 4a/4b hair? Do
you think I should invest in a Pressing Comb? I've tried $40 dollars
flat irons and $100+ dollar flat irons and none of them can keep my
roots straight.
I only have 2 inches of new growth and I don't plan on getting the
big cut anytime soon.
Since I started growing my hair out I learned that many black
beauticians don't know a thing about growing out healthy natural
black hair.
I also found out that neither did I. lol :)-
The products I am currently using are Wild Growth Hair oil, UBH
conditioner, Moisture max, and when my bottle of Pantene Relaxed and
Natural Shampoo runs out I will begin the No shampoo/conditioner wash
method.
Recently I've started having a lot of breakage so I'm going to start
using the Aphogee reconstructer
I have a question about hot oil treatments for natural hair. Does
anyone that has natural hair do these and are they helpful for
natural hair or is this just for people with relaxed hair?
This morning in church I saw a sistah with beautiful all natural hair
and i was tempted to chop the relaxer out of my hair with some
scissors, knife, spoon, or whatever i could find when i saw her hair.
it was really tight natural curls that with a part on the side and an
original look i cant really explain it but im rambling so thats my
progress

[GrowingHealthyNappturalHair] I'm trying new products

2007-10-31 12:37:47

Hello All,
I have not posted in a while, but I always read the helpful advice
offered here. I am trying some new products: elasta qp feels like
silk, elasta qp design lotion, elasta qp glaze, and protectiv anti-
breakage strengthener. My hair has been breaking ever since I had it
pressed bone straight a few months ago. Hopefully these products
will help. Have any of you ever used them? I am at my wits end with
my hair. I always have it either an afro puff( which may be
contributing to the breakage) or braids. It seems like every thing I
try causes my hair to break. I'm tempted to just cut it short and
put on a hat!!!!!

Hello all. Just wondering what essential oils can I mix into my shea

hair but the smell on both just seem so BLAH. I have dry skin and dry

Also, how should I mix them in, by hand, mixer, melting, or what?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [GrowingHealthyNappturalHair] Sister with TWA needs advice....

2007-10-27 03:39:42

Hi

First with locs many people suffer from them thinning or just falling out on their own...regardless of what size, length, or way they are done. Although sometimes starting with thinner locs like sisterlocs the hair may easily become thinner or fall off. Ways you & your stylists could have dealt with it was by marrying or sewing 2 locs or so together, starting the locs new in those areas, or using a bit of extension hair or yawn to the areas where the locs fallen out for length and to you get it caught up with the rest of the hair. And with lent being apart of your hair and locs....lent and dirt often times get trapped into locs so you must be very careful of that. Products heavy in oil, mineral oil, beeswax, or any heavy products
often times draws dirt and lent in more and traps them within the hair making it harder to come out, so if at all possible try to limit products with those ingredients and when sleeping wrap the hair in a satin or silk scarf, and sleep on silk or satin pillowcases instead of cotton if you can.

Far as moisture issues, I know how it is my hair is always extremly dry as well. Products I highly recommend is all natural hair butters such as shea butter, braid sprays,a bit of activators, conditioners with a little water in a spray bottle where you can mist on the hair through out the day. And one product I just got into is Suave 2-Minute Recovery Deep Conditioner and it adds a nice moisture and softness to my hair, a line I would recommend is Organic Root Stimulator especially their carrot oil. Doing different natural treatments with real fruits & store bought products such as bannas, strawberries, advocatos, honey etc I am soo sure you will find something that will give you great moisture.' Braiding or twisting the hair up nightly with a good moisture applied to the hair and using a plastic cap at night or just lounging around the house really locks in moisture to the hair.

Styles I would say that might work well for you and your hair is comb coils, finger coils or just fingerstyling the hair or bantu knots and flat twists if you have enough hair.

Whoo... Slow down and take a deep breath. It must have been really
traumatic getting your locs cut. Maybe you should take a little
while to try and figure out what is going on before you make the
committment (time and money) to starting SL again. I have heard of
people losing locs before, it happened to my neice, but there is
usually some underlying reason. If you don't figure out the reason
you may be back at the same place in a couple of years.
Next the dryness. One thing that really helps my hair hold moisture
is running a humidifier in my house (actually two). They are not
very expensive and you should notice a difference in your skin and
hair immediately. Also, some people have had success with natural
aloe gel and honey. I know several loc wearers that only use aloe
and honey on their hair (no oils) and they have no problems with
dryness.
Hope you figure this out. Let us know how it works out.

Hello E'rybody !!!
I hope you're having a wonderful day well, it's been a few weeks, what's going on with you and your journey to grow some healthy napptural hair.

It has ben hard. First I cut a lot of my hair but i steel have some relaxed hair. so the only styles i can where are braids or kinky twist. I have used weave 4 times my whole life. I dont like it at all, but it will do until I do the big chop. Then i started getting little things that look like dreadlocs in the middle of my hair. My mom has bought lots of prouducts but they all have mineral oil or something else harmful to my hair so i canot apply anything to my hair but olive oil.

Have you tried any new products???

When i take these kinky twist down I am goint to start using almost the whole family of doo gro prouducts. My friend used it for three months plus pink lotion and her hair grew five inches in three months anfter doing the big chop. It looks like it grew 3 inches because it curls.
Have you had any weird experiences with nappy haters recently??? If so, share !!!
Well i did get in that fight . I beat both of them at the same time. I even got to hit one of the girls in the eye with a belt buccle. Im not violent. Both of them spread rummors on me. They always hit me. One time i got my hair done And one of them pored water on my hair and the curls came out. When they started talking about my hair that was the last straw. Message # 7719

The one thing I've noticed about the entire nappy process and continual journey is that the. experiences, products, etc., you experience can either help or hender your process of learning to love every single kink, coil, napp, and curl on your head !!!

peole tell me that me that eggs give your hair a great shine. It worked when i had relaxed hair. But now it made my hair so thick. Not the good kind. Damaged thick. It was not damged it look that way after a good hot oil the next day it looked better.

Are there any products that you would recomend. Something cheap. Im a youger sister. I live off allowence lol. Im turnig 14 this year. next year i can get a job.

Sister with TWA needs advice....

2007-10-24 12:01:15

Hello all,

I am supposed to see her in about a month to start SL's again, but am
not

go
back to SL's, or maybe try something else, like traditional locs, or
one of
the temporary styles until I get more length and can make a more
confident
decision. I can't do extensions, because they dry my hair and the
chemicals
bother me.
Here is my problem: I had major issues with lint and product
buildup. Even
now, with my TWA, I have to be careful to check my hair, as it seems
to want
to cling to everything! Also, I am still dealing with major dryness
issues.
These two things, that are easy for most to deal with, have been
especially
difficult for me, as I don't tolerate 'oils' very well and am still
looking
for something I like that will moisturize and not irritate. As for
the
lint, like I said, even with my TWA, I am having to pull out the
occasional
tiny piece, as my hair wants to grab onto everything, I do believe it
is
because of the dryness. I have checked my dryer and keep the house
dusted,
I don't see an extreme amount around the house, but if there is
anything, it
gets in my hair! This is why I am concerned about starting locs
again, at
least until I get my dryness issues dealt with.
Right now, I am mostly concerned about having a style that I can wash
2
times a week without having to worry about the style coming undone,
but can
also be taken down, let's say every 4-6 weeks at most. I would like
the
style to look nice, as I am keeping my head with a scarf when I go
out, and
would like to wear 'my hair' when I go out, but am not really feeling
such a
short afro. I see some beautiful styles that are very short and
natural,
but am not sure about being able to wash it when I want, etc.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
God bless,
Hazelpone

Re: cutting my hair

sweetie, as a mom and a teacher, I have to say something to you.
Never feel like you have to physically harm someone else over words
about your hair. IT IS NOT THAT DEEP! I'm not sure how old you are,
but it sounds like you are underage. I know you are growing into
yourself, and learning about yourself, and yes that is a wonderful
experience. But you don't have to prove anything to anyone!! I'm
worried that you think fighting is "so cool" for whatever reason.
Especially, in light of the fact that you are trying to prove to your
mother that you are mature enough to make this decision for yourself.
I don't want to see you getting suspended, and believing that
fighting was your only option. You could have schooled the girls
verbally and left them standing there looking stupid. You've been
getting some good advice from the other sistahs on this site, but
keep in mind that you are still growing, and although you may not
agree with what your mother is telling you, you may be the one to
educate her. So choose your words and actions carefully.
Bless

Re: hair straight and fast

2007-10-20 19:57:49

If you are absolutely sure you want straight hair for you grandma,
and you are willing to spend a little money and protect your "lovely
naps". I have two possibilities for you.
1 - WIG
2- Phony Pony.
In either case you are compromising without damaging your hair or
scalp.
Personally I wouldn't give in at all, but I am stubborn and over 40!
You have to live with your mother but I don't think you have to
sacrifice your hair for that. A third option is a head wrap. That
way she won't have to see it. If you hold your ground but continue
to show you mother respect, I think your she will realize that you
are serious. Keep us posted.

Re: [GrowingHealthyNappturalHair] hair straight and fast

2007-10-20 05:11:16

Why don't you just show your folks how proud and beautiful you are
just as you were intended to be. I think perming your hair per
someone else concedes to the notion that straight is right. That
you are not beautiful unless you transform your being by putting
acid on your scalp. Explain to them that OUR HAIR isn't straight.
I think if they really love YOU then they'll love YOU. If you're
going to be an embrassment b/c of your hair, then the problem runs
deeper than that. I don't know...I don't have any suggestions on
how to get hair straight b/c I would never want to fight against
myself to be something I'm not. Maybe your sense of self
acceptance and pride (assuming that's the reason you went natural
in the first place) will help transform them. Sistuh 2 Sistuh.

Re: Dry Hair

2007-10-18 16:51:01

I second that, a humidifier is a must. I run two in my house all
winter and I can really tell a difference. Also, cover your hair
when go out, dry air will pull the moisture from you hair, and last
use a product to seal in the moisture. I use avocado butter and
olive oil on damp hair. They work wonders.

My hair is usually moist in the winter, I have more problems in the summer, but I have had a humidifier in my bedroom for the past 18 mos. and it does wonderfully, especially in the winter in helping to keep my hair/skin moist. (I have psoriasis too, and it helps with that as well). They got 'em at walmart for like $20.00 bucks. I got one at work too!! PEACE!

Hey Napptastics --

2007-10-17 22:37:12

Happy end of January(LOL)-- just an update on ME (if anyone gives a
good wazoo) My hair is coming along nicely, it is about 8" long now,
but the shrinkage makes it look like about 5". Although I don't know
the exact month of my total natural self, (I usually go by my drivers
license, because it is a picture of me right before my 1st big chop)
but it is roughly 2yrs and 2 months of freedom from the chemical. I
must confess I need professional help when it comes to the products.
I'm worse than a "Casino Hoe" -- every time I have an extra dollar,
I'm all up in Walgreens or the African shop or the Internet, trying
to cop my next "hair fix" -- LOL...pitiful. Right now I'm wearing a
protective style of about 5 flat-twists going straight back, it is
cute and only takes 10 minutes to do by myself. I am back on ORS
Serum (I rotate products frequently) for about 2 weeks. A new product
I have tried (new to me anyway, but I think it's been mentioned here)
is the Dark & Lovely peppermint shampoo, that is absolutely
wonderful, and the the Dark & Lovely Loc & Twist Butter. I used the
butter to succesfully do my husbands baby locs. It took me two days!!
(It woulda took less time but you know we had to run to the store,
eat, do the laundry, whoop the kids, talk to mama on the phone, watch
the football game, etc...LOL)
If you want to see an example of what I'm talking about go here:
http://www.khamitkinks.com/Twists_Locs.html
click on starter locs -- my hubbys look just like that, only better!!
I tell you, I'm an artist and a scholar, and I'm serious about my
shit! LOL - seriously though, it was my first time doing it, and it
turned out beautiful and he is getting maad compliments everywhere.
Folks askin' where he got it done, and he says "my wife did it" and
then they ask if I can do theirs, and he's like "hell no!" He wants
these fingers all to himself. LOL. And to think he could not stand
the site of my "nappy head self" a few months back. Now he is caught
up in the rapture of NAPPY love. Anywhoo -- our 12th year of marriage
anniversary is on February 6th, but we always celebrate it on

I know this because i saw the hair in the sink from when she rinsed out my perm. It is my fought. nappy because i do not leave it in a long time. i only perm it to

Re: Starting LOCS

2007-10-15 22:25:37

--- Hi Yvette N.
I started my locs with coils about 7 months ago. I transitioned for
about 7 months before I did the BIG CHOP. I only had about 3 inchs
when I started my locs. I didn't want to start with coils but
because of my hair texture (hair was too soft and curled to tight to
twist while it was so short)that is the way I had to go. I could
have waited longer until I had more hair, but I was ready to get rid
of all the straight hair I had on the ends.
I don't think it really makes a big differce. I think either way as
long as you take care of them as you should they will all turn out
the same way. (loced)
The journey for me hasn't been that bad. It has been 7 months and
most of my hair is semi-loced. All but the top and the sides(by my
temples).
Will you be starting your locs soon?
Hope I helps a little.

Re: Trimming/Dusting

2007-10-15 20:04:00

I just clip the end of my twists every few months. If you are
looking for your hair to be even all over then this may not be a good
idea. My hair is not perfectly even, but it is long enough not to be
noticable.

Re: [GrowingHealthyNappturalHair] Trimming/Dusting

2007-10-15 15:29:03

Hey Tammi! I used to trim my own ends until i started getting my hair pressed every other month starting back in October. When I did it myself, I would twist my hair and cut off the ends. I noticed that I was getting a little scissor happy, lol. So now, I get my hair dusted/trimmed by the person who presses my hair, and she does a good job pressing too, not a hard press at all, and she trims it after she presses it (you can see it at public.fotki.com/bubblylg). She does a much job than me because she can see the back and top of my hair better than I can. Hope all is well! [INLINE]

Fair Trade thoughts (long)

2007-10-14 21:26:41

Think about Fair Trade as the consumer version of a living wage. A living wage
is the minimum that a person needds to make an hour working 40 hrs/week to
support a family of four. This number takes into consideration the cost of
living of an area: Food, rent/mortgage, utilities, transportation and health
insurance, phone.
For example, the living wage in Lynchburg, VA is $9.50/hr. This is for a family
of four. Lynchburg is a relatively small town with a low cost of living, so you
see where the problem is double that in larger cities. Most people here make
$6.50 hr (fast food) and work 50 or more hours a week. To make in the living
wage range, you would either have to work at a foundry, the Frito Lay plant (WOW
chips were created here), for Centra Health, etc. Those are jobs that you need
some type of education for, and you have to be able to pass a drug amd
background check. So unless you force the powers that be to pay a living wage,
then most of them don't.
Fair Trade products simply means that you have a fair trade of money for goods.
It is not unusual to hear about coffee or bananna or fruit growers in other
countries getting paid 2 cents USD for a pound of coffee. And they have to live
for the whole year on maybe 50.00 USD and get two or more other jobs when the
company buying the item has millions of dollars (Starbucks, Walmart, Dole).
Starbucks recently became a fair trade company, but as mentioned before, Walmart
is one of the most egregious habitual offenders of not paying a fair wage.
So we do our part by buying Fair Trade items in the US as we can. Yes, the item
is more expensive. But with time, and every country switching over to Fair
Trade, the prices will drop, like they have steadily for organic food. Don't
misunderstand me, I do not have much money, so I buy when I can. But for things
that are essential to me, such as shea butter, black soap, etc. there is no
excuse not to since I use those thing on a regular basis anyway. And I don't go
to Walmart. But everyone makes decisions based on their situation.
I think that as people of color, we need to be trying to support those companies
that use ethical practices. Those same companies that refuse to pay fair wages
to coffe, bananna and fruit workers also do the same thing to their employees in
the US, who happen to look like us or be us. And also, how can we demand respect
for equal rights and treatment when we support those who treat others like they
treat us? Just food for thought.

[GrowingHealthyNappturalHair] Great New Hair Product

2007-10-14 11:47:03

HeyyyyYyyYY Everyone!!
I hope all had a good day!!
Well, my hair is usually always dry and soaks up any and all signs of moisture. Luckily I picked up a few tricks & products where it isn't 2 bad all the time. Well, I went to Krogers the other day and saw that they had some hair products on Clearance for a cheap price. And I saw one that was a Suave product (which is a line I LOVE) well it is called Suave 2 Minute Recovery Deep Conditioner. OH MY GOODNESS it left my hair soft to the touch, moisturized, and smooth. Plus it says you can use it every day, which I may have to try it out.
But for those with very dry I hair, I truely would reccomend it.

Info on Fair Trade products

2007-10-13 21:37:30

Keke,
Questions about Fair Trade itself(why buy fair trade products?)
www.fairtraderesource.org/faqs.html
A list of fair trade companies
http://www.ifat.org/sourcing.html
http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/products.htm
Keep in mind that getting fair trade certification is expensive, so larger
companies with more revenue are more likely to have the certification. Also keep
in mind that companies that say they are fair trade but have no certification
might be in the middle of the process. Some companies choose not to have
certification because the cost (around $10,000 USD) is prohibitive for them, so
their longtime customers know that they are Fair Trade and buy from them
anyway.
There is no international Fair Trade group for things like shea butter right
now, it is in the process of being formed. You should only buy hair care items
from people who state that they are fair trade only after sending them an email
asking about their policies. The only two that I know of personally who are fair
trade buyers and who are both Black owned are:
http://www.afrikanrepublic.com/
http://www.nasabb.com/
Hope this helps,

I'm hoping to get together with other napptural women in the San
Francisco Bay Area
for a hair day. If you're out there and interested let me know. I'm
hoping to get advice, swap products, maybe do/learn new styles and
make some new friends.

Hi Deniece welcome to the group, glad you could join us!!
I don't know any salons or stylists personally who are in California but here are a few sites with listings of salons...and maybe you could call or visit them to see if they may be able to provide a good service to you & your natural hair.
http://www.nappyhair.com/salon_locations/california_salons.htm http://www.bombhair.com/California.htm
And for sites on different styles:

http://www.itsallgoodhair.com/cornrows.html

And when you said you wanted to learn how to do 2 strand twists did you mean on your own natural hair or with extensions?

Verifying Free-Trade

2007-10-11 22:48:54

Hello Ladies,
I'm very interested in supporting Fair Trade companies but would like to know if
there is
any way to verify some of the claims they have? Is there an indepedant company
(such as
the BBB) that can vouch for that claim? Is there a standard for companies
claiming to be
fair trade? If so, where can I find such information?
Thanks in advanced.

Re: hair looks shorter?

2007-10-10 03:04:22

When I transitioned the hair did look shorter for a little while.
Natural hair usually has a lot of shrinkage. I have been natural for
a while and it looks as if my hair has not grown in the last couple
of years. My twists stay above my shoulders, but my hair is actually
a little longer than mid back. My hair will always look shorter than
it actually is.

Answers to Keisha and Keke

Hello,
Keisha:
It looks to me in the picture that she used about 2 or three cups of water for
the rosemary spritz. That makes sense to me, since she used four rosemary
teabags and she said that she made her rosemary spritz stong in order to work
better. I hope this helps you.
Keke:
To Dry Herbs
If the herb grows on a stem (rosemary, marjoram, thyme etc)
Rinse them lightly first and gently pat dry. Do not bruise them. I take mine and
swish them gently by the stems in cold water.
The easiest way to dry them is to tie a small bunch together by the stem with a
piece of string and turn them upside down.
Rinse them lightly first and gently pat dry.
Take a small brown paper bag and punch holes in it for ventilation.
Put the bundle of herbs in it upside down and hang in an out of the way place
out of sunlight to dry.
I hang mine in the kitchen above a doorway. I tie the string holding the herbs
to a nail in the wall. You could use a thumbtack if you're renting, my landlord
is not picky (he just wants his rent and he leaves me alone), but yours might
be.
The bag will catch the herbs as they dry and fall off so you don't lose any and
it will keep them from getting dusty.
In the winter herb drying takes about a week or so due to indoor heating.
If the herb does not have a long stem (bay leaves, basil, ceremonial sage)
Take the herbs and put them on a mesh screen (or on cheesecloth)in a single
layer and put them somewhere to dry out of the sun, away from pets or children.
You can also spread them in a single layer on parchment paper (find it in the
baking isle) on a cookie sheet and bake them on the lowest setting of your oven
for 4-5 hours or until completely dry.
Do NOT leave them unattended, or you will come back to a stinky house and burnt
herbs. Tarragon smells awful drying in the oven but wonderful on food. Just a
warning.
Remove the sheet when they are BONE DRY (they will crumble in your fingers), let
them cool completely (at least 4-5 hours)and put in a container to store.
Make sure they are completely cool before you put them away, or the condensation
will make them mold in your jar.
I use canning jars that have the seperate lid and the metal ring that screws
down for mine. You can buy them at any superstore, Win Dixie, Kroger, Food Lion,
Giant, Bi Lo, Piggly Wiggly, etc in the baking isle. This is how I store all my
herbs and it keeps them very fresh by locking out the moisture. Always store
herbs in a cool dark place away from sunlight and they wil last for about a
year. I like the 4 oz and 6 oz canning jars.
